Mahavishnu Orchestra: 1973.01.27 - Buffalo (EX Pre-FM?) [FLAC]

Buffalo, NY "Century Theater"
January 27th, 1973

Here is a great concert by the original Mahavishnu Orchestra: "Century Theater" in Buffalo, NY on January 27th, 1973. This is a FM recording and it sounds so good, that I think it`s in fact from a preFM tape. Particularily great is the version of "Dawn" (track 2 on the first disc) which also had a special problem: According to Wolfgang`s Vault (where this show also is offered, but I didn`t get it there) "the master multi-track reels literally ran out while this song was still in progress. Although
approximately two minutes were missed during the reel changes, here for the first time
listeners can enjoy the conclusion of this remarkable composition". Unfortunately this resulted in a fade-out and a fade-in in the 16th minute of this track which was quite disturbing as this a such a dynamic performance. I tried to smoothe these fades and I`m very pleased with the result: Now there`s absolute continuity and nobody can notice the edits. Hope you`ll enjoy it!

Magmasystems Notes:

This is the first time that these recordings have been released. The original reels came from "A French Gentleman" who stumbled upon the various Magma
blogs and who, as it turned out, had seen Magma several times in the 1970's. The gentleman not only had some assorted photographs, but had recorded
various concerts. These tapes made their way to a well known DIME contributor who wishes to remain anonymous at this time. This person spent quite
a bit of time digitizing the music and trying to clean up the sound. Some of these efforts were successful, some were not so ... as will be apparent
in some later releases. I have dubbed these recordings "The French Gentlemen Tapes", and after about two years, I have been given permission to
share these through time. Much thanks go to the Gentleman, as well as Trahnsferheur.

If you want to find out more about Magma's appearence at Chateauvallon, read the article here:

http://kohntarkosz.blogspot.com/2009/11/best-no-51-magma-chateauvallon-1972.html

"It was half past two in the morning when Magma could take possession of the stage because in addition to having nothing to say CTI said slowly.
Magma begins to play and two hours sweeping and ridicules everything that had been previously submitted to and Châteauvallon.
The outstanding musician, a remarkable singer, all led by a crazy drummer who knows what he wants and what he can get,
as this is Magma which confirmed what we already believed, namely that they are the best European group and they may arise in the
face of monsters equal Anglo-Saxon. The atmosphere and the climate created by Magma are not unlike those of James Brown,
that the hypnotic rhythm crushes everything in its path and hungry machine that swallows you whole if you happen to
take leave your finger. Faced with this demonic rhythmic change of high-class musicians like Francois Cahen, whose piano solo was
reminiscent of Keith Jarrett. It should also emphasize the virtuosity of the singer Klaus, he would name them one by one as all
are outstanding, but above all Magma is a group and certainly the largest that we had in France.

The ovation they gathered was the most enormous sounds in the pines festival Châteauvallon and the last image I retain
is that of three thousand people standing, screaming, asking over at half past four in the morning."

Can: 1973.05.12 - Paris (EX- FM?) [FLAC]

Can - Olympia, Paris 1973.05.12

Source: mixing desk/fm broadcast(?), generation unknown
SA90 cassette -> Protools -> AIFF -> FLAC

Quality: A-/B+

A = excellent, E = abysmal

No signal processing or effects used at all.

TRACKS:

Disk 1

01 Queueing Down 36:39
02 One More Night 09:08

03 Spoon 32:10
04 Vitamin C 13:44

Damo Suzuki - vocals
Holger Czukay - bass
Michael Karoli - guitar
Jaki Liebezeit - drums
Irmin Schmidt - keyboards

This is a great recording of Can from '73 and I am curious to know if it might be from a French radio broadcast as opposed to a straight mixing desk recording. There is a slight tape hiss to it and a few minor audio defects i.e. slight muffling here and there, which to my ears sound the kind of generation artefacts you might expect from analogue copying. It is however a very enjoyable listen, check out the sample. This concert may have appeared on Dime during a flood of Can recordings about two years ago but this is from my source procured about from a dealer circa 2003/4.

Seasonal greetings for Winter Solstice 2010 and many thanks to all those who bring such musical riches to the community that is DIME!

RIP Don Van Vliet.

Can: 1976.01.17 - Lyon (EX Aud) [FLAC]

CAN

Lyon, France. 17 January 1976

Another superb sounding audience recording of a Can show from January 1976. I received this in a trade back around 2002 and unfortunately it's origins are unknown although given the quality probably very low gen. The actual venue is unknown and the CAN database at http://all-blues.de/music/kraut/can.htm doesn't offer any clues either.

Artwork is included and I make no excuse for the mouse, limited or otherwise.

CAN

Saarbrücken, Germany. October 24 1975

An audience recording of excellent quality. Generation unknown but most likely very low. Received in a trade on CDR in about 2006. Titles are fictitious and I'm not that clued up to make any sense of the listings given at http://all-blues.de/music/kraut/canlive.htm#1975.

If anyone has a version of this show with known lineage it would be most welcome. In fact any more CAN would be a treat.

-----------

Source: Dime id#90534 by 'boomboom'
FM Broadcast>master tape>CDR(Philips CDR 570)>wave(EAC)>flacf(8)

Editing (Nero 6):
------------------
Converted to mono (left track had almost no glitches)
Edited out tape flip during 'Bring me Coffee' & moved the first 1.42 from track2
Edited out all abrupt applause / announcement fragments
Removed a few other small glitches
Smoothed out track transitions, to make a continuous show

Transfer: Nero > EAC > Flac Frontend (level 6)
Quality: Worth a solid A now
-----------------------------

The original download was basically good sounding, but admitted that there were long
glitches in the right channel, especially in 'Bring me Coffee', so as indicated in the
comments which claimed the whole thing was mono, I patched in the left channel to cure
the glitches.

Imagine my surprise when it was obvious that the (mono) patches sounded much better than
the rest of the post, so I did this version which is mono (left channel only) and it
sounds absolutely terrific for this vintage.

Other minor editing described above also helped to transform this into a really good
listen...

...Enjoy !!

3.Improvisation (24:57)

lineage: aud. tape unknoen gen. > cool edit > CDR > flac

This is NOT from the "Flashback & Freeky" Bootleg. It's the same recording, but a different generation tape (which I got in the mid 80s)
In my opinion it's a somewhat clearer listening.
Some of you will notice that the 2nd improvisation is shorter than on the FF-Boot.
This is because on the tape a huge section of the track is repeated and additionally contained something not of this concert.
I removed this, so this makes the track 18min shorter, but complete.
This tape transfer and editing was a lot of work, which was done 9 years ago with cool edit software.

This is Krautrock History. The only know live recording of 1969 of Amon Düül II.
Qualiy isn't the best, but worth having.

Magma: 1974.02.06 - Radio Bremen (EX FM) [FLAC]

(TomP) Remaster
------------------
MAGMA
Radio Bremen
Studio F
6 February 1974
------------------

Radio Recording from very low generation cassette
Best version of this recording I've heard so far.

Source: Dime post by nadir_53 - thanks for this and encouragement to remaster and post !!
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=134197 (now dead)

Changes made (Nero 7):
-------------------------
Cross-mixed all tracks (84:16), big improvement in instrument dynamics & stereo image
Reduced left channel by 5-10% to centre stereo balance
Evened volume on all tracks
Cut the glitch at the beginning of each track
Cross-faded all tracks by 1sec to smooth track transitions
Fixed 200+ small digi-glitches, similar to vinyl clicks, mainly in d2tr01 & 02
Note: the hiss in the background appears to be from an amp, so I didn't do anything to correct it

Quality: Got to be an EX, definitely CD quality
---------------------------------------------------

Dedicated to 'hanwaker' who pleaded for me NOT to post this, LOL...!!

This is a quite superb recording by Radio Bremen, although it sounds like there has been
some 'stereo broadening' at some stage (as often appears the case) which blurs the
dynamic impact of the drums and bass, so I fixed that plus I did some other editing
(details above).

The major plus for me is just how fantastically Vander's drum kit is recorded, even to
the extent that you can hear (on really good headphones anyway) the different places
hit by the two drumsticks on the same cowbell (on Ptah) - possibly the best percussion
recording I've heard anywhere !! For the first time ever I "get" what Vander is doing
on Ptah.

The whole recording is also truly great so please....

Grab and Enjoy !!

I think most Hawkwind collectors/fans would agree that probably the best sounding 1980 "Levitation" show, is the roio entitled "What A Long Stained Trip it's been" recording, from Glasgow recorded from a feed off the mixing desk. So obviously that show is a soundboard patch/recording and therefore not allowed by Hawkwind in their trading rules.

However I do own a copy of that show which I came across at a record fair in Manchester a number of years ago, and paid a dealer £14 for it.

Now obviously I can't share that show, but the reason I mention it, is that this recording, sourced from the audience is absolutely fantastic and on a par sound wise with that. The more I listen to it, the more I'm amazed by it. In fact this and the one at the Ispwich Gaumont are the two best audience recordings I've ever heard from this tour.

The recording is complete and is simply stunning I will easily rate this as 8/10 or Ex, but must say for a Hawkwind audience recording that's now 30+ years old, this is as good as it gets. With some TLC and someone who knows what they are doing this could be turned into something truely spectacular.

Any negatives about this recording. of course there's some negatives. A bit of tape hiss only really noticable in between tracks. There's a bit of audience chatter but again this is mainly in between songs, and not distracting in anyway. There's also a slight repeat of about 3 secs at the end of PSI Power and Brainstorm (possibly the tape flip?). But thats it, to my ears anyway.

Highlights for me are many, but I love Who's Gonna Win The War, and Dust of Time. I love the sound of Huw's guitar.
The Ginger Baker drum solo is also fantastic during Brainstorm.

I am probably in the minority but I always looked forward to seeing the drum solo's at gigs and over the years
I've seen a few Paice, Powell, Bonzo, Palmer, Peart, and Ginger Baker is right up there in my opinion.

I received it in a postal trade from my friend B sometime ago, for which I thank him and for his continued and ongoing genorosity in sharing with me.

I saw the band about three times on this tour, Preston, Manchester and Liverpool and thought they were fantastic, although my memory of those shows now is a little hazy (coughs) to say the least. I absolutely loved this tour.

So I share this as I received it with the addition of this info file and the MD 5 Checksums. I've also added some artwork.

This recording complies with Hawkwinds trading policy, and I personally thank them for allowing fans to share shows such as these. Their trading policy can be found here:

http://www.hawkwindmuseum.co.uk/trading%20rules.htm

PLEASE DON'T ENCODE TO MP3 (unless for personal use).

I have never seen this anywhere before, except amongst the tape trading community.

Share freely, but and if you do share this, then please share it exactly as you now receive it!

Don't ever sell this recording.

This show has been made available by Hawkwind fans for Hawkwind fans, and I'm just a small link in the chain along the way.

SUPPORT the band at all times and as often as you can, by buying their official releases/merchandise and going to their gigs (on tour various locations around the world 2011 - details:

http://www.hawkwindmuseum.co.uk/tour%20dates.htm for tour dates/merchandise).

An officially released live 1980 show from Lewisham Odeon 18th December 1980 can be found on disc's 2 and 3 of the 3cd remastered re-release of Levitation.

That album, along with their back catologue can be bought here:

Please enjoy a fantastic show!

This audience recording is culled from a gig at the City Hall in Newcastle on 19th September 1976.

Now as any Hawkwind collector knows 1976 shows are very rare with not many in circulation. To my recollection only two 76 shows have been shared on here before.

Anyway this one I received from my friend B in a postal trade sometime ago. I'd like to thank him for continually sharing his extensive Hawkwind collection with me.

As to the sound quality of this audience recording I would rate it at 7/10 or Ex-, it's very acceptable indeed. Also the setlist gets me excited as a Hawkwind fan. Rare outings for Chronoglide Skyway, Kerb Crawler, Time For Sale, and an embryonic Uncle Sams On Mars, with some interesting lyrics, make this a must have.

It's also good to hear Robert Calvert back behind the mic.

I saw the band on this tour at Preston Guildhall and although I now can't remember much about the 76-77-78 tours, I must have seen the band 15 times in that three year period, I just remember them being absolutely fantastic, full of energy, and I'm absolutely amazed that some half decent recordings have appeared from these tours.

As always share freely but never sell. Do not encode to MP3 unless for personal use.

Support Hawkwind by going to gigs, buying their cd's and merchandise etc.

Check out the official Hawkwind website here: http://www.hawkwind.com

Also check here for Hawkwinds trading/recording policy: http://www.hawkwindmuseum.co.uk/trading%20rules.htm

As a fan I appreciate the band for allowing us to share recordings such as these.

I received this gem of a recording in a postal trade about a year ago.

The files had already been converted to flac and I've shared them exactly as I received, but I've added some MD5 checksums.

Well what can I say about this show other than it's one of my favourite Hawkwind shows.

I'm listening to this recording as I write this review and I'm being transported all the way back to King georges Hall Blackburn in 1974. This is my favoutite period of Hawkwind and the setlist here represents what all Hawkwind fans want. A live 1975 show to be released Officially.

Anyway until that day comes we have to make do and mend with shows such as this to satisfy us, and trust me this show will satisfy.

So I come to the sound quality, this is difficult and I always try to mark a show down because what I think a show is and what the listener thinks might be two different things.

Consequently this is a solid 7/10 maybe pushing 7.5/10 or Ex- to Ex. There is depth to the recording, plus the levels are constant and your ears very easily adjust to it.

If you have a good graphics equaliser on your Hi Fi you can make this sound really good indeed. Not in the same bracket as Leicester 75 but not far off imo.

But taking the whole package into account, ie The show itself the crowd and band clearly are both enjoying the gig. The setlist, with rare
outings of Opa Loka, Spiral galaxy 28948, and the sensational Assault and Battery/Golden Void and this makes this a MUST HAVE show for anyone who remotely likes Hawkwind. I can't say more than it's one of my favourite live Hawkwind shows from this era.

Apparently Brainstorm was played as an encore but is missing from this version. If anyone has that I appreciate it if it could be shared.

This recording complies with Hawkwinds trading policy, and I personally thank them for allowing fans to share shows such as these. Their trading policy can be found here:

This is a request from geneseo

I received this as a postal trade absolutely light years ago, from where I do not know, however I do know that it is a direct copy of the silver cd "Lord Of Light"

I have to apologise that for ease of my personal listening purposes. I long ago discarded Disc 1 and Disc 2
but combined the discs into one relabelled them Tracks 01 to 16, which has enhanced my listening pleasure. (I haven't altered anything
and the end of Disc 1 is after Paradox, obviously Disc 2 starts with You'd Better believe It)

However other than that the flac files are exactly the same as I received them.

To be honest I thought everyone would have this disc as this recording is brilliant, 9/10 Ex+, and is the Hawkwind equivelant of the Oakland 1977 recordings.

It's the classic line up of the band with Lemmy still on bass and vocals. The setlist is superb however unfortunately
the material from the Warriors LP wouldn't feature in the set until later in the year.

This recording complies with Hawkwinds trading policy, and I personally thank them for allowing fans to share shows such as these. Their trading policy can be found here:

comments:
This recording is not great sounding quality, but for a 73 HW aud, it's not bad.
Probably recorded with a little Sony deck. I don't know which one. This was my 1st
live Hawkwind recording (other than the official live LP of similar era which is
very good) and for many years my only one. It's very close to the whole show, 2 tape
flip cuts, (both spliced, not much missing at all), not very clear fidelity but it
is stereo. I don't know if the tracking is right (some tracks are probably 2 or 3 songs) but
the sequence is right. I don't know when HW's 1st U.S. concert was, but this is the
earliest one I've heard. It's a good concert. The Academy of Music sound was not that
good, but the NY crowd was in a HW mood, not too much crowd noise, a little bit of
tape noise (it was on the master tape too, mastered on Advent cassettes). I didn't
see this show, didn't even know who Hawkwind were in 1973. I got it from the taper
about 20 years ago. No remastering needed- unless you want to EQ or do some noise
reduction or track editing. I like to stay away from doing that unless it really
needs it, but I'm probably the worst Hawkwind track editor heard yet on the dime.
Fortunately, as 73 HW recordings go, this is far from the worst I've heard, maybe
even one of the better sounding ones. There's something about the frequencies in a
HW show that seemed to screw up alot of recordings, but this doesn't have that problem.
I would guess almost any HW fan will find this enjoyable.
thanks to tiedye for making the original recording, sounds like he did a good job.

Do not sell this recording.
Trade freely, losslessly and gaplessly.

I bought this double Cdr recording at a "back street" record exchange shop, a while ago.
Although the discs are very professionally produced and could pass for an official release unfortunately the discs are CDR recordings.

Consequently this is a direct copy taken from that cdr, and as always with CDR recordings you can never be sure of the source
material, so it is very much a case of "Let The Buyer Beware".

However when I accessed the online data base it immediately recognised the discs as "Top Rank Southampton UK 1973-07-25".

As to the sound quality I would rate this great sounding 1973 show at a very solid 7/10 or Ex.

This is indeed one of the best sounding "Space Ritual" era recordings around. It is a fantastic gig,
captured here by the taper, for us to enjoy 36 years after the event!

As always my thanks to the taper of this show and also to the person who original shared this show!

Share freely but NEVER sell.

Lets remember Hawkwind are a current active touring band:

So support them by going to gigs, buying their cd's and merchandise etc.

Check out their official website here: http://www.hawkwind.com

Also check here for the bands current trading/recording policy: http://www.hawkwindmuseum.co.uk/trading%20rules.htm

You can also find detailed info on their re-issue back catologue here: http://cherryred.co.uk/atomhenge/main.htm

Anyway please enjoy a great sounding show from the "Urban Guerilla Promo Tour"!

I hope you enjoy it!

Cheers

Paul

track 6 include three Eddie Cochran covers, whereas the beginning of the tune "Medley" from their 4th LP is not played here.
For the infos thanks to propylaen and zubbid, contributed in the comment section of the former upload.

Line-Up:

Hans Hartmann - bass
Mani Neumeier - drums
Axel Genrich - guitar

This is a mono recording and the levels are varying, but not by far not so much on the left channel. During the first transfer I fumbled around with the levels of the two channels. This time I focussed on the left channel which is very consistent apart from two small parts where the right channel is in fact a bit stronger. I took the left channel besides one small section, made it stereo again (fur burning purposes), and got a fine broadcast document with consistent volume and less hiss than before, especially in some parts.
I have tracked tracks 5 to 6 this time acoording to the info by propylaen). It could also be handled as one track.

No EQ, no noise reduction and no speed correction.
It could get some equalising, but I'm not firm with that, and cranking the treble up while playing it brings pleasure enough, imho.
I have had the experience of FAKE STEREO of this - right channel with a small delay. That was quite good to listen to! But I cannot account for uploading a FAKE, can I?

No artwork.

This time the setlist is, according to propylaen's comments, filled up a bit!

Hawkwind: 1978.03.06 - New York City (VG+ Aud) [FLAC]

New York, Bottom Line Club, 06 March 1978 (Remaster)

01 - Intro
02 - Hassan-I-Sahba
03 - Instrumental Bridge
04 - Brainstorm
05 - Steppenwolf
06 - High Rise
07 - Robot
08 - Spirit Of The Age

Dave Brock - guitar, vocals
Robert Calvert - vocals
Simon House - keyboards, violin
Adrian Shaw - bass
Simon King - drums

Quality:
======

Audience recording, pretty good - this is surely one of the better Calvert-era audience recordings.

Historical Details:
==============

This is an incomplete version of one of their shows on their last tour before breaking up and becoming the Hawklords. Simon House left the band on March 13 to join David Bowie. On 28th March the band played their final gig in San Francisco to break up immeadiatly after.

Technical Details:
==============

This one was seeded in March at dime. The seeder claimed this to be from the bootleg "Live at the Bottom Line". I doubt this because
a. it has no vinyl crackle at all
b. there is no record flip inbetween (although there was a gap in the middle - but this didn't sounded like a flip)
c. it is missing "Sonic Attack" which is on the vinyl
d. a mp3-version which also claims to be from the boot has all the above evidents and is notable different

So therefore I would guess this simply as an audience recording. Anyway, this is the best sounding version of all the the New York-Concerts I have heard.

The main reason for remaster was that the show sounded much too slow. I pitched it up to 11% (!!) taking the studio versions and the Leicester 77 versions as a reference. After this the show became quite lively and much more enjoyable.

After this I
- patched a drop-out in Hassan-I-Sabha at around 5.00
- removed a gap after "High Rise"
- removed some unrelated chatter at the end
- normalized the left and right channel
- made a decent fade-in/fade-out

So the new lineage would be

AUD -> ??? -> CDR -> EAC -> WAV -> FLAC -> Audacity -> CD Wave Editor (for cutting) > Flac

Hawkwind: 1981.10.04 - Liverpool (VG+ Aud Master) [FLAC]

4 Oct 1981
Liverpool Empire

Lineage: AUD > WAV > FLAC

Quality rating: 8/10 - THREE-GUITAR HAWKWIND and very clear and crisp sound, esp Lloyd Langton.

01 Angels Of Death
02 Golden Void
03 Magnu
04 Dust Of Time
05 Virgin Of The World
06 Psychedelic Warlords (tape flip in middle)
07 Instrumental
08 Shot Down in the Night
09 Sonic Attack
10 Brainstorm
11 Silver Machine
12 Master of the Universe

Lineup: Dave Brock, Harvey Bainbridge, Huw Lloyd Langton, Martin Griffin

This recording released on 11 Feb 2008 for the first time. A poorer-quality tape from this gig has been around for a long time, rated by one authority as 6/10.

Further info:

Recorded by Graham using a Philips N2415 portable cassette recorder and one mic wired up for dual-channel mono.

Subsequent tape breakages adversely affect Shot Down in the Night - three short pieces are missing.

Digitised to WAV on 10 Feb 2008 using Cakewalk GTP.

Compression to FLAC files using FLAC Frontend.

******************************Pass It On**************************

I taped this gig. And digitised it. And seeded it on bit torrent. But I still think the recording belongs to Hawkwind! Therefore, only THEY can stipulate how it's distributed in the future. Hawkwind's trading conditions currently do not bar the distribution of shows in MP3 form.

Cheers (Sonic_Hawk) 2008
